Marriage and Families Assignment 1
Chapter 1
2.
What is meant by the idea that race, class, and gender are interactive systems rather than
individual variables? Think about your own family of orientation, and take one particular aspect
of your family life as an example. Discuss briefly how race, class, and gender act simultaneously
to shape that aspect of your family life.
Race, class, and gender are “interactive categories of social experience that affect all
aspects of human life—shaping all social institutions and systems of meaning—including the
institutions of marriage and family as well as family values. Families are not separately affected
because of the racial composition of their members, to which is added the influence of their
economic situation, then the gender of their members, after which comes the impact of the sexual
orientation are not independent variables that can be tacked onto each other or separated at will.
They are concrete social relations interconnected with one another and their various intersections
produce specific effects.”
Race, class, and gender combined influence us in every aspect of life. They all make up
who we are, how we act, what we accomplish, and aspire to be. They cannot be separated or
classified as individual variables because they all, combined influence us as one and cannot be
separated.
Especially, considering the times we’re in now, it is extremely obvious that race, class
and gender affect our success in life. I’m an African American, middle-class, male in America.
My race determines my paygrade, my increased possibilities of being pulled over or jailed for
any offence, and plays a role in what jobs I am considered for and the list goes on. My class
plays a role in how society views me. My class plays a role in what homes I’m able to buy, what
loans I qualify for and many other things like, what political party I support or supports me. My
gender puts me above others automatically according to society because I am a man but also
applies pressure. As the man in my family I am responsible for stability, safety, strength, and all
of the above. It is my job to be strong and successful. I am the foundation upon which all my
family is built; spiritually, physically, financially, and mentally.
