Jay Shetty is excited to share her story with you. He remembers
his earliest memory vividly: he was five or six years old, holding
his sister as she was born. He feels that his parents did a great
job of raising him to be independent and excited about life. Jay
started flying on her own at six years old to visit his mother in
Germany. Since then, he has flown to many different countries on
his own.
My parents actually got me a therapist when they were going
through divorce and this is 30 years ago so you have to think I
was six years old. They were so cautious about how to handle the
situation that I think it made me feel like it wasn't a bad thing
that they were separated. They were doing these things because
they loved me and they wanted to be happy people
independently and so the way they handled it then reflected on
who I am as an adult today. So, I think as I think about one day
becoming a parent all those things from someone being six really
does reflect on who they are as a parent. I think hindsight is that
they're older and I have the gift of age from them and I think
because they were fully mature adults by the time they got
married and had kids they realized how to be a parent more. I
think a lot of times when you're still trying to figure yourself out
in your 20s and 30s it might be a little bit too early but I think my
mom waited till she was 36 to have me. My dad was 49. I think
for all of us who who can support our parents in any way it is
such a blessing. Time and society place a lot of these boundaries
and barriers, but did you feel more free from them because of
how you were parented or did at any point in your life did these
become a part of your education?
Growing up, I told my parents I wanted to be a television host. My
mom said, "Okay, but a realistic job like being on TV is not
realistic. So, your backup job is going to be PR. I went to school
for journalism, my backup was PR. Instagram and YouTube came
