Smithfield Foods is an American food company dedicated to responsibly producing good
food. The company provides jobs and is a steward of the environment and the community. It is
well known for its massive depiction of a pastoral landscape. The food plant studies global and
local trends and identifies critical issues that help them find strategic management priorities.
There has been a great extent of provision of job opportunities by this food company; however,
the food company had been on the verge of closing with doubts of whom to blame for the
closure, California or the company itself.
The Smithfield Food Company said it would close the California plant due to the rising
cost of the business in and around the state. The closing of this plant would render about 1800
employees jobless. There had also been a fifteen-year emotional and expensive organizational
battle that has led to differences among the workers. After this long battle, the workers decided
to vote on unionizing. The workers wanted to unionize so they could present their complaints
and have a fair process to have a voice in the job.
The Smithfield plant held an election in 1997 where the workers in the food plant
complained that the company had cheated in the election since the victory was only crucial to an
