Evaluate own development over the duration of the programme
In the future I aspire to become an Adult Nurse. I aim to do this by completing my 2 year college
course (BTEC Health and Social Care Level 3) and then continuing on to university. Recently, myself
and one of my peers have been researching different university options and have been booking
open days to gain more information on the benefits of going to particular universities. We have
visited Edge Hill University and have a booking to attend Liverpool John Moore’s University on Friday
24th June 2016. Myself and my peer have also contacted several accommodation realtors and
discussed accommodations and have secured a booking at the Glassworks which we will view on
Friday 24th June 2016. I chose to apply and continue this course as when I began researching the best
course for me, I found that this course offers me everything I need in the limited time of two years. I
believe that the two year period it takes to complete the course was an appropriate period for me to
mentally prepare myself for the transformation from college life to university life.
When I first began the course I was quite concerned that the majority of my peers would be of
school leaving age and that I would be the eldest (and stereotypically the most mature). I was also
worried about cliques that tend to form in education environments and that with my fear of being
the eldest I would be left to myself. However when I joined the course I found that a lot of my peers
were around my age group and that I was not the eldest on the course, which I was very relieved
about. Also my peers seemed very friendly and open and I had no issues with interacting with
others. I was also concerned that I did not have the mental capacity to complete a college course as I
had previously tried two separate courses and found that they did not suit me. Being on the course,
however, has shown me that I am perfectly capable and that I thoroughly enjoy the path that I am
currently pursuing.
I was quite uncomfortable and beginning placement, I also felt like I did not have the time as I was
also caring for my father. I have been in paid employment before, however, I felt like being on
placement would make me less valuable than employees and I was terrified that I might insult
someone because of how nervous I was and that my body language may be interpreted incorrectly.
When I arrived at my placement at Sherdley Court, I was greeted in a friendly manner and discussed
my course and what I hope to gain with a supervisor. We discussed what I might be doing whilst I
was there, I was shown around the building and asked how I would prefer to complete my
placement. I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and the people that I met whilst I was there, it
showed me that although some people may view the elderly as useless I certainly knew how
interesting and intelligent they were and still are.
I believe that at the beginning during the adjustment period it was quite hard to handle the
assignments and have them in by deadlines. As the course went by it became increasingly easier to
manage workloads and complete them by the dates they were to be submitted. I believe that
throughout the course I have done quite well, I believe that I have learnt a lot from this year and
that it has made me as a person more aware especially when it comes to health, safety and security
or equality and diversity, but I also believe that my communication skills have increased greatly. I
think that as the course ended and there were not really any deadlines due to staffing issues, it
became much harder as I felt I did not have enough time and I had too much work to try and
complete. It was during this period that I became quite stressed and very upset that I may not finish
the course with the grade that I had hoped for.
When I started the course my aspirations consisted of completing and handing in work on time and
achieving top marks in my assignments. These aspirations have stayed the same throughout the
course and I have become more and more motivated to achieve these. My main motivation for
completing the course is that my mother has been a nurse for over 30 years and always says how
