Blood Pressure Disorders
Hypotension
• Systolic pressure < 90 mmHg
• Diastolic pressure < 60 mmHg
1. Orthostatic hypotension
Drop in BP on rising from sitting or laying
Slow sympathetic response causing low blood flow to brain
Common in the elderly
2. Chronic hypotension
• long-term drop in BP caused by poor nutrition or hypothyroidism
3. Acute hypotension
Rapid drop in BP, most often due to hemorrhage.
Sign of circulatory shock (Acute reduction of blood flow to vital
organs )
Hypertension
• Types:
1. Primary hypertension (~ 90% of all cases)
2. Secondary hypertension (~ 10% of cases)
Primary or essential hypertension
• No underlying cause
