Plasma membranes of adjacent cardiac muscle cells are interlocked at the
intercalated discs which contain:
• Desmosomes: Anchor/mechanically hold the cells together
• Gap junctions: Allow passage of ions from cell to cell, effectively
transmitting action potentials across the entire heart
