Welcome to NR 603 Clinical Practice Practicum! I am Sandra Deering DNP, FNP
and I am excited to be teaching this course for Chamberlain College of Nursing!
My background in nursing is varied and brings a host of perspectives to the table.
I graduated with my BSN in 1993 and practiced as a staff nurse in Critical Care
for 5 years until I returned to school for my MSN-Family Nurse Practitioner
degree and licensure. I continued practicing in Critical Care for 9 years running a
busy Stepdown Unit. Then I transitioned to several part time positions including
primary/psychiatric care of incarcerated adolescents, hospice care of terminal
patients and leading an FDA phase 2 proof of concept trial looking at pain
management intervention for Fibromyalgia. I have also taught online and in the
classroom in Michigan. Was I kidding when I said my background was varied? I
definitely enjoy using humor in education to keep the information light, lively
and engaging! I completed my Doctorate in Nursing in 2011.
In my NP role on the stepdown unit I was responsible for all the admissions, daily
interventions, crisis interventions and discharge planning. This experience helped
me hone my skills at quickly putting together the picture of the patient’s
complaint, symptoms, and diagnostics to form a list of differential diagnoses
upon which the final diagnosis and treatment plan are derived! One of the most
important things I learned in that experience is this: The answer is almost always
in the patient’s history! You will hear me say this often! A patient who accurately
reports their symptoms is your best tool! We will discuss in the class how to
maximize this statement as well as what to do when the patient is not a good
reporter.
I grew up in Michigan and have spent most of my life here with my husband and
two young boys (6 and 7 years old). I am an oenophile, enjoy golfing and
physical fitness as well as performing comedy and dramas at our local
community theater! Props to anyone who can tell me what an Oenophile is!

, I am very excited to begin this journey with all of you!
Welcome! Dr. D
