NURSE PRAC NR501-NP week 6 Culture and Caring Theories
Culture and Caring Theories Proper patient care goes beyond the physical; it considers all elements that compose a person. Culture is one of the biggest elements that affect all aspects of a person and should be considered before assessing a patient. The US is a melting pot for cultures where people from all over the world come either to migrate or visit. The healthcare provider should learn about different cultures and ensure that cultural and spiritual aspects are being considered in the first visit assessment. I was born and raised in Egypt and moved to the US when I was 18. Coming from a completely different culture, I understand how challenging it may be for people to express their cultures freely without feeling judged, or stereotyped, and also appreciative when someone considers my culture in my care or even if it is just in a friendly setting. Therefore, I am always all in for considering everyone’s culture and beliefs when caring for them. The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence is the theory that resonates most with me as it connects culture, community, family, and person, dividing them into 12 mid-range domains (Purnell, 2018). When the nurse practitioner considers those domains when analyzing the patient’s symptoms, they would ultimately be able to come up with the best and most appropriate care plan for every patient, even after they pass away
