Family Nurse Practitioner Track
WELCOME AND CONGRATULATIONS!!
• You have completed the MSN or Post-Master’s core online courses (first year) and you are
about to begin the FNP specialty track online courses of NRSG 667, NRSG 668, NRSG 669,
and NRSG 670 concurrently with NRSG 665: FNP Practicum (second year).
• Your first year was under the direction of the MSN Program Director Dr. Deb Bruley and
your second year will be under the direction of the FNP Program Director Dr. Suzanne
Phipps.
• During your practicum hours, you will begin to examine and medically manage patients
with your preceptor. This is an immense responsibility you.
• NRSG 665 is different from any courses that you have taken before, because you will be
seeing real patients, applying what you have learned in the core online courses, learning from
FNP specialty track online coursework, learning from your practicum experience, and along
with working and other obligations.
• At this level of graduate work, there will be expectations on your part to time manage
school, work, and home life.
• You need to be comfortable participating in an entirely online program.
• You are expected to continue writing at a scholarly level including APA style,
professional grammar, punctuation, spelling, flow, syntax, and the use of current
references.
• Please be sure to check with your respective state’s FNP educational requirements
including courses, certification, and licensure expectations.
• This practicum packet is equipped with information and forms that you will need to
be successful during your practicum hours.
• This information is provided as an elaboration for clarification of the MSN Student Handbook
policies for FNP students preparing for practicum. All FNP students are responsible for
reading and following all polices in the most recent edition of the MSN Student Handbook
located on the Benner Library website at:

• After the completion of the entire program, you are eligible to take the national FNP
certification with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and/or
American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPBC).

, PRACTICUM EXPERIENCE OVERVIEW
• Students are primarily responsible for the identification of practicum preceptors and sites.
• The focus of the practicum experience is Family Primary Care. Students are expected to learn how
to medically manage patient across the lifespan from newborns to geriatrics. Special emphasis is
on practicum experiences with rural, urban and under-served/under-resourced populations.
• Students need to consider that practicum time will be scheduled anytime between Sunday through
Saturday, so work schedules will need to flex around course assignments and practicum
schedules.
• It is the responsibility of the student to contact their preceptor to discuss a mutually agreeable
schedule and obtain directions to the practicum site. This should be arranged prior to the beginning
of each practicum course.
• Students may need to complete site specific paperwork and/or attend an orientation at the site
prior to starting their practicum hours. All Castle Branch and site requirements need to be
completed before any paperwork can be completed by the FNP track office.
• Some practicum sites require a formal Affiliation Agreement (AA) to place students at their
practicum site. If the site requests an AA, then please notify
immediately with the site’s correct contact person information including their full name, title,
phone number, and e-mail address. ONU and the sites legal department will negotiate a binding
contract between the practicum site and ONU. Please note that this process may take several
weeks and the student will not be permitted to start his/her hours at the site until the formal
contract has been approved. The FNP track office will inform the student and practicum site once
the contract has been approved by all parties.
• Students will be responsible for bringing all required paperwork to the preceptor before the first
day of the practicum hours. This will include: 1) Practicum Preceptor Agreement Form 2) An
introductory Letter to the Practicum Preceptor 3) Preceptor Evaluation of FNP Student
(Competencies) 4) Preceptor Evaluation of MSN Student Experiences 5) NRSG 665: FNP
Practicum Outcomes and Responsibilities 6) Course Syllabus 7) Orientation for the MSN Student’s
Preceptor (from NRSG 627)
• The Preceptor Agreement form must be completed two weeks before the first practicum day and
signed by the preceptor. The completed and signed form must be scanned and e-mailed to

Genius Scan® that the student can utilize to scan in the forms.
• Practicum Compliance: All students must provide documentation under Castle Branch.
Students may not start their practicum hours until all documentation has been uploaded and
approved by Castle Branch.
• All documents must be kept updated to continue practicum and throughout the FNP track– this is
the responsibility of the FNP student. If any item expires, the student may not complete any
practicum hours until it is updated in Castle Branch.
