To provide a place for ships to restock supplies: The Cape was located at a strategic point on the trade

fresh water, meat, vegetables, and fruit to prevent scurvy, which was a major problem for sailors on long
voyages. The VOC saw the Cape as an ideal location for a refreshment station, where ships could
restock and continue on their journey.
