, Knowledge Objectives
• To understand the use of ultrasound in establishing fetal wellbeing
• To be aware of the benefits and uses of ultrasound in the first
trimester (e.g. viability, dating, establishing chorionicity in multiple
gestation, first trimester screening)
• To be aware of the benefits and uses of ultrasound in the second
and third trimesters (fetal growth and biometry, structural anatomy
scan, biophysical profile scoring, arterial Doppler studies and
placental localisation)
• To understand fetal cardiotocography (CTG) and the criteria for
defining an abnormal CTG

• To observe at least one first trimester scan (singleton
or twin pregnancy)
• To observe at least one second trimester scan
(anatomy or fetal growth scan)
• To observe at least one biophysical profile (BPP) with
Doppler study scan
• To review at least three CTGs (both normal and
abnormal) and to be able to comment on the type of
abnormalities and their implications
