Abstract
Anxiety and depression are common among older children and teenagers, but it often goes
unnoticed until it is too late. Depression and anxiety fall under psychological disorders. In the
following study I want to assess the relationship between parenting styles and its effect on an
adolescent’s depression and anxiety. I am going to use a quantitative research method; The
Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) will be administered to 20 adolescents to measure the
severity of the depression they have. I will also include one parent of each of the 20
adolescents to measure which parenting style the adolescent received. I will administer the
Parenting Style & dimensions questionnaire to determine the parenting style of the parents of
the adolescents. The data collection method is therefore questionnaires. The research will be
conducted at Welkom Gimnasium High School. This study hypothesizes that there will be a
positive relationship between parenting styles and its effect on adolescent depression and
anxiety. The researcher will analyse the data using the inferential analysis method, that use
the data to make conclusions. The researcher will work with the numbers in the questionnaires
to see whether the adolescent’s depression and anxiety was caused by the parenting style they
had. The significance of this study is to open people’s eyes to see what your parenting style
can do to your child that became an adolescent. It will also aim to improve existing research.
