ITEC Anatomy & Physiology - Tissues
Adipose tissue - ans --Made up of fat cells, found between muscle fibres and under the
skin; retains body heat and provides food reserve
Areolar tissue - ans --Loose connective, most general in whole body, semi-solid and
permeable, contains yellow elastic and white fibres, fibrocytes, mast cells. found all over
body connecting and supporting other tissues, ie under the skin, between muscles,
supporting blood vessels and nerves and in the alimentary canal
Blood (tissue) - ans --Fluid connective tissue 45% cells, 55% plasma. Transports
nutrients and oxygen to tissues, removes wastes, fights infection and clots
Bone (tissue) - ans --Hardest structure in the body - Cancellous and Compact types -
support and protect the body and produce blood cells in bone marrow
Cartilage (tissue) - three types - ans --Hyaline, yellow elastic cartilage, white
fibrocartilage
Ciliated epithelium - ans --single layer of mostly columnar cells attached to a basement
membrane. Tiny hairs on top called cilia help to remove mucus, foreign matter etc.
respiratory system linings
Columnar epithelium - ans --single layer of tall, rectangular cells attached to a
basement membrane; resilient. lining active parts of the body such as stomach,
intestines and urethra; MUCUS
Connective tissue - 8 types - ans --areolar, adipose, lymphoid, yellow elastic, white
fibrous, bone, blood, cartilage
Cuboidal epithelium - ans --Single layer of cube-shaped cells attached to a basement
membrane - lining of kidney tubules, some glands; can secrete
Hyaline cartilage - ans --connects and protects, found on articular surfaces of joints,
costal cartilages and parts of larynx, trachea and bronchi
Keratinised stratified epithelium - ans --Hair, skin, nails etc
