Jaw Relation Record and Try in
Terminology
Articulation: the dynamic movements of the teeth in relation to each other.
Balanced occlusion: The simultaneous contact of the maxillary and mandibular
teeth on the right and left and in the anterior and posterior occlusal areas
when the jaws are in either centric or eccentric relation, within the normal
range of mandibular function.
Balanced sliding occlusion / Free articulation: The even contacting of teeth as
the mandible moves to and from eccentric to centric maxillomandibular
relations (any mandibular movement made without interference)
Centric occluding relation: This exists when the jaws are in centric relation
and the teeth (occlusal surface ) are in centric occlusion. It is the most
important basic relationship of the body of the mandible to the
maxillae.
Centric occlusion: The occlusion of opposing teeth when the mandible is in
centric relation.
Centric relation/ retruded jaw relation: The relation of the mandible to the
maxilla with the mandible in its most retruded position / The most retruded
relation of the mandible to the maxillae when the condyles are in
their most posterior unstrained position in the glenoid fossae.
Christensen’s phenomenon: A gap which appears between the posterior ends
of opposing flat occlusal rims when the mandible is protruded. This
phenomenon is made use in the registration of the sagittal condylar path
inclination. The resulting protrusive record is used later on to adjust the
sagittal condylar path controls of articulators.
Dental occlusion: Contacts between teeth

Face bow: A dental device which is used to determine the relationship
between the maxilla and the axis of rotation (hinge axis) of the
temporomandibular joint and transfer this relation to the open axis of the
articulator. / It is a caliper-like device that is used to record the
relationship of the jaws to the temporomandibular joint or ( opening
axis of the jaws ) and to orient the casts in this same relationship to
the opening axis of the articulator.
Hinge axis: A transverse axis about which the mandible can rotate without
translatory movement of the condyles.
Hinge movement: An opening or closing movement of the mandible about the
hinge axis.
Inter-alveolar/ inter-ridge distance: The vertical distance between specified
positions on the maxillary and mandibular alveolar ridges at the occlusal
vertical dimension.
Intercuspal position: The position of the mandible when the teeth are in
intercuspal occlusion.
Interocclusal distance or clearance/ free-way space: The distance between
the occluding surfaces of the maxillary and mandibular teeth when the
mandible is in a specified relaxed position, it ranges from 2-4 mm / The space
between the maxillary and mandibular occlusal surfaces when the mandible is
in the rest position.
Jaw relation: A relation of the mandible to the maxilla.
Mandibular face bow: A device used to locate the transverse hinge or the
condylar axis.
Maxillary face bow: A device used to record the relation between the maxilla
and the TMJ and to transfer this relation to the articulator.
Maximum intercuspation: The complete intercuspation of the opposing teeth
independent of condylar position. / Maximal contact between teeth
Occlusal plane: A common plane established by the incisal edges and occlusal
surfaces of the teeth. [This is usually curved and is therefore not strictly a
plane]
