NURS 222 GERIATRIC & MENTAL HEALTH NURSING
This course syllabus is a contract between you and Bryant & Stratton College. It represents the minimum expected learning outcomes for
this course. Your instructor will also provide a supplemental syllabus describing the approach to the course, instructional methods,
tracking calendar, assignments, assessments and grading scheme, plus guidelines for your success.

COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
This is a theory and practicum course, which builds on the role of the nurse as provider of care and emphasizes the manager of care role
for groups of individuals. Clinical activities focus on critical thinking and clinical decision making skills in the care of geriatric patients
and individuals with long-term care, mental health and rehabilitative needs.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Bryant & Stratton College prepares graduates for career and life by facilitating learning experiences for students to achieve the following
intended outcomes:
Course Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Examine a teaching and learning plan for a geriatric or mental health client utilizing the nursing process.
2. Select and utilize appropriate nursing interventions in providing care to the geriatric and mental health client.
3. Differentiate modifications and application of QSEN competencies in the delivery of nursing care for geriatric and mental
health clients using best current evidence.
4. Establish and maintain a therapeutic nurse-client relationship utilizing effective communication techniques.
5. Appraise the importance of the role of the professional nurse as an advocate for geriatric and mental health.
6. Examine how stereotyping may affect personal bias and professional development.
7. Select and utilize appropriate information sources to inform ethical decision-making and improve patient outcomes for geriatric
and mental health clients.

• Information Literacy and Communication - Utilize appropriate current technology and resources to locate and evaluate
information needed to accomplish a goal, and then communicate findings in visual, written and/or oral formats.
• Relational Learning - Transfer knowledge, skills and behaviors acquired through formal and informal learning and life
experiences to new situations.
• Thinking Abilities - Employ strategies for reflection on learning and practice in order to adjust learning processes for continual
improvement.
• Quantitative and Scientific Reasoning - Follow established methods of inquiry and mathematical reasoning to form
conclusions and make decisions.
• Community and Career - Participate in social, academic, and professional communities for individual growth and to function
as a citizen of a multicultural world.
CAREER CONNECTION & WORKPLACE CAPABILITIES:
Each course will provide learners with an opportunity to connect the subject matter of the class to their intended profession, to draw the
bright line between the topic studied and its application/value in the workplace. Details about the career connection and workplace
competency will be provided on the supplemental syllabus and tracking calendar.
