ASSIGNMENT 1
SEMESTER 1
2023

, The extract from the Old English poem, 'The Wanderer', provides us with a glimpse
of the English language spoken in the late 900s. In order to place the extract in its
historical context, it is important to note that Old English, also known as Anglo-
Saxon, was the language spoken in England from the 5th century until the Norman
Conquest in 1066. Old English was influenced by a number of languages, including
Latin and Old Norse, which had a significant impact on its development.
Latin was introduced to Britain by the Romans in the 1st century and remained a
significant influence on the English language until the Middle Ages. Latin
influenced the vocabulary and syntax of Old English, and many Latin words were
incorporated into the language, especially in the areas of religion and law.
Old Norse, on the other hand, was introduced to England by the Vikings during the
8th and 9th centuries. Old Norse had a significant impact on the development of
Old English, particularly in the areas of vocabulary, syntax, and grammar. Many Old
Norse words were incorporated into Old English, especially in areas related to
seafaring, such as shipbuilding and navigation.
When we compare the Old English text with its Modern English translation, there
are a number of differences and similarities in orthography, syntax, inflection,
spelling, and vocabulary. In terms of orthography, Old English used a runic
alphabet, which was replaced by the Latin alphabet after the Christianization of
England. Modern English, of course, uses the Latin alphabet exclusively.
In terms of syntax, Old English was a highly inflected language, meaning that word
endings were used to convey grammatical information. Modern English, on the
other hand, relies more on word order to convey meaning. In terms of inflection,
Old English had a complex system of inflectional endings, which gradually
simplified over time, leading to the loss of many inflectional endings in Modern
English.
There are also differences in spelling between Old and Modern English, as the
spelling of many words has changed over time. However, many of the words used
in the Old English text are still recognizable in Modern English, such as 'wind' and
'sea'.
In terms of vocabulary, there are many similarities between Old and Modern
English, as many words have remained relatively unchanged over the centuries.
However, there are also many differences, as Old English had a much more
complex vocabulary in certain areas, such as the vocabulary related to seafaring.
The changes that have occurred from Old English to Modern English are due to a
number of factors, including the influence of Latin and Old Norse, as well as the
