The point of mapping out the timeframe is to benefit the epidemiologists. They would need to know when
the incidents started to then begin to interview the patients and see where they were during those times to
narrow down the search perimeter for what caused the sickness as well as to see the timeframe it took for
them to be sick.
2. Describe the key symptoms and incubation period for the illness affecting the eleven blue men.
The key symptoms were parts of the body turning blue, some were rigid, cyanotic, and in a state of shock.
These symptoms would not happen all at once but would progress the longer the illness was in their
system. The body began by turning blue in some parts and would spread the longer untreated. Some
showed signs of abdominal pain and dry-heaving that lead to their bodies becoming rigid and in a state of
shock within a short incubation period.
3. Describe each step of an outbreak investigation as it pertains to this particular event, indicating all of
the key points in the investigation (include how it started, why epidemiologists got involved, where
did the investigation take the epidemiologists, who was interviewed, what/who were the potential
culprits identified during the investigation)
The outbreak started after eleven men in total came into the hospital for the same unknown reason. The
outbreak investigation started when Beekman-Downtown Hospital called the health department reporting
