PHOTOGRAPHY BASIC 3
This is the third and final part of a series in which we will discuss some basic
topics, such as:
RAW versus JPEG
Crop sensors versus full frame sensors
Mirrorless cameras vs. DSLR cameras
If you are new to photography or trying to figure out what camera to buy and what
settings to use, you have come to the right place. Welcome, glad to have you here.
RAW is the most popular option among photographers and artists who take their
craft seriously. RAW Images tend to have better dynamic range and are far better
if you want to do a lot of post processing. If you shoot RAW and open the file in a
program like Lightroom, you can change the parameters without damaging the
file.
A crop sensor basically removes the edges and crops the image to the same
frame, giving you a less wide field of view. Some of the advantages of a crop
sensor are:
Big cost advantage - they are usually a lot cheaper.
Inherent telephoto advantage - a telephoto boost, if
you will.
DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex. So how does a DSLR work? Light
passes through the lens, hits a mirror, is passed through a prism and through the
viewfinder so you can preview the image.
When you take a picture with a mirrorless camera, there is no mirror, not even a
prism. DSLR cameras have generally been faster until recently when they have
gotten a little more competition from their mirrorless counterparts. Mirrorless
cameras are smaller and weigh less, so you can pack them in your camera. You
could probably carry two mirrorless cameras for a pro-sized DSLR.
