Summary management of common maternal conditions that may complicate pregnancy, haematological problems, epilepsy and diabetes.
1) Haematology: Describe the management of anaemia in pregnancy. Describe the risk factors for bleeding and thrombosis in pregnancy. 1) Epilepsy: Describe the effects of pregnancy on the maternal disease and the effects of the disease on the pregnancy and developing fetus. Understand and describe the effects of antiepileptic medications on the developing fetus and managements strategies to reduce the risks. Recognise specific seizure triggers and certain high risk times of the antepartum and postpartum periods. Describe management strategies of reducing both the seizure risk and the risk to both mother and baby if a seizure occurs. Discuss safety precautions in caring for the baby. 2) Diabetes: Discuss the incidence, aetiology, screening procedures and management of women with gestational diabetes. Understand the pregnancy and fetal risks associated with untreated gestational diabetes. Describe the management of women with pre-existing diabetes (type 1 and 2) in pregnancy and discuss the adverse maternal, pregnancy and fetal outcomes related to poorly controlled diabetes in pregnancy.
