Curriculum FM 01 Course
Syllabus Semester 01 –
202120
A. Curriculum: Organ Systems-based Modules
Semester Description: The content of the first semester curriculum is organized within
two courses: The Foundations of Medicine 01 (FM 01, 13 credits) course and the Clinical
Skills 01 (CS 01, 2 credits) course. The FM 01 course includes 4 modules: Fundamentals
of Biomedical Sciences 1 (F1), Hematopoietic and Lymphoreticular 1 (H1),
Musculoskeletal and Integumentary 1 (M1 & I1) and Endocrine 1 (E1). The first (F1)
module provides a sound foundation in biomedical sciences and is followed by three
organ systems-based modules. CS 01, the Clinical Skills 1 course, includes a single
module which consolidates clinical skills and competencies throughout the first
semester. The structure of the first semester is shown below with the blue M boxes
identifying when mini examinations are scheduled:

B. Modules and Module Directors for Foundations of Medicine 01:
The courses and modules in semester 01 are arranged and sequenced to develop
student learning in a process built upon basic principles of biochemistry and cell biology
to more integrated functions of the human body, with the clinical skills course introducing
students to physician competencies for good medical practice. Faculty assigned as module
directors are the student contacts throughout the semester concerning any questions
on schedules, content access, examinable content, timetables for assessments, and
other information. The sequence of modules in semester 01, and the module directors are
listed here:

C. Content Presentation and Assessments
The content in FM 01 is presented in lectures, anatomy labs and small group sessions.
This content is assessed by formative assessments, mini-examinations, practical
examination, and a final examination. Summative mini and final examinations are
cumulative and multiple choice; they are identified as mini- examination 1 (week 4),
mini-examination 2 (week 9), mini-examination 3 (week 14), and the final examination
(week 15). The anatomy practical examination is held in week 9. There is one formative mini
exam (mini-examination 0; week 3) and 10 formative assessments within the semester.
Except for the mini 0 exam, each formative assessment and discussion group, anatomy
practical examination, mini- examination and final examination are weighted to contribute
to the determination of the FM01 cumulative score. Please note students failing to meet
