22. l TYPES OF SENTENCES
According to Clause structure, sentences are divided into four
different categories-Simple, Compound, Complex, and Compound-
Complex Sentences.
22.2 SIMPLE SENTENCE
Examine these sentences:
1. Maggie is an intelligent girl.
2. She has won a scholarship.
In each of these sentences, there is only one Finite Verb. Thar
means there is only one Clause. If a sentence has on1 y one Clause,
rhat Clause will invariably be an Independent Clause . In grammar,
an Independent Clause is known as the Main or Principal ~r 15
Supero,dina'te Clause. A sentence which has only one Main Clause
kno'\\rn as a Simple Sentence.
