The Owl and the Pussycat
The Owl and the Pussycat is a famous English poem written by Edward Lear in 1871. The poem is
divided into three sections and tells a story about an owl and a pussycat going on a journey
together.
What did they take with them?
They took some honey and plenty of money on their trip. Let's hope the honey and the money
didn't mix!
The Owl's Song
The owl looked up to the stars above and sang a song while playing a small guitar. It's funny, but
this type of poetry is called nonsense poetry!
They even wrapped their money in a five pound note. Hopefully, they were able to keep it
separate.
Pussy and the Owl
Pussy said to the owl, "You elegant fowl!" She loves his singing and thinks it's sweet and
charming. She is proposing to him despite being a cat and him, an owl. They have been
considering marriage for quite some time, but they have held back due to being different
species.
The Piggywig and the Proposal
A piggywig is standing in the wood with a ring at the end of his nose. The owl and the pussycat
are speaking to the pig and offering a shilling for their wedding. A shilling was a small, silvery-
colored coin from the UK.
Turkeys and Holidays
In the UK, we eat turkeys at Christmas. It is our traditional bird that we eat. In America, they eat
turkey for Thanksgiving in November. Unfortunately, this is not good news for turkeys. However,
this turkey has the power to marry.
