Biotechnology
Industrial biotechnology has got wide range of application. The fermentation
principles used in industrial biotechnology can be applied for the production of
various commercially important products. The five major groups of commercially
important fermentations are:
1. Large scale production of microbial cells or Microbial Biomass
Fermentation process can be used for the large scale production of microbial cells
and microbial Biomass. Various karyotic cells can be cultured in large scale in
industrial biotechnology. The 2 commonly produced biomass in fermentation industry
are Bakers yeast and SCP (Spirulina). SCP can be used as food and fodder.
2. Large scale production of enzyme
In industrial biotechnology microbial enzymes has got wider application because of
its enormous production. It is easy to improve the productivity with the development
of rDNA technology. Enzymes of animal origin can be synthesized in microbial cells.
3. Production of microbial metabolites
The products formed during the log phase of growth of an organism are essential
for growth and they include certain amino acids, nucleotides, organic acids, etc.
the primary metabolites are produced during the tropophase (Log Phase) of
batch culture.
E.g. alcohol production by bac’ is used in beverage industry.
Citric acid produced by microorganisms is used in food industry as
preservative.
Glutamic acid has got wider application in food industry as tasting agent
(Ajinomoto monosodium glutamate)
The product formed during the idiophase of the microorganism which are not
required for its growth is called secondary metabolites. Secondary metabolites
