Poem : The Ecstasy

by : Jone donne

Donne ecstasy is a Clear and coherent expression of Donne’s philosophy of love .Donne agrees with
Plato that true love is spiritual it is a union of souls but unlike Plato donne does not ignore the claims of
body.

Theme: Ecstasy is one of the popular poems of jone donne which explore his unique ideas about love.
That pure, spiritual or real love can exist only in the bond of souls established by the bodies.

Summary : The poem starts with two lovers sitting at the bank of the river. The setting is very natural
calm and quiet described in erotic terms: like a pillow on a bed . It is a pastoral setting where 2 lovers
are sitting together holding hands and looking in to the eyes of each other . Their eyes met and the rays
coming form their eyes are so strong that they are twisting with each other and reflect the images of
each other . They become ecstatic because their souls escaped from their Bodies and raised to a state of
bliss. Their souls are joint together. When love joins two souls together they give birth to a new soul
which is more finer and lack the defects which were present in the single souls. The Bodies of these
lovers lay down like a statues . The fusion of these souls produce a new soul which is much more
powerful and fine just like violet when they are grafted. If a third person passes by them and if he is
more matured in love he will take a magical portion from the air and it will make him more pure by
heart. He will not criticize them Rather he will get influence by them . In the above lines the poet is
talking about the souls he is saying that the love is between the souls not the bodies but then in the last
lines his idea Change form souls towards body. Now the poet says that senses come from our body so
we should be thankful to our bodies . Now the two lovers understand that the true love is the result of
their physical attachment provoking spiritual union Body is the medium of contact of two souls.
Therefore the lovers turn towards their bodies to understand the mystery of love. Body is the medium
of love . so spirits must act through bodies. Love requires physical as well as spiritual connection.

Stylistic devices: In this poem many stylistic devices are used such as :

Paradox: have Heard this dialogue of one .

Conceit: used throughout the poem opposite concepts are brought together

Simile: in the very first line simile is used “ where, like a pillow on a bed .
