to accommodate the concepts of trigonometry in your mind? What are the simplest
trigonometry concepts you can imagine? In your day to day, is there any occurring fact
that can be interpreted as periodic patterns? What strategy are you using to get the
graphs of trigonometric functions?
Trigonometry, the division of mathematics concerned with specific functions of angles and
their application to calculations. There are six functions of an angle generally used in
trigonometry. Their names and abbreviations are sine (sin), cosine (cos), tangent (tan),
cotangent (cot), secant (sec), and cosecant (csc). These trigonometric functions in association
with a right triangle are demonstrated in the figure. For instance, the triangle encompasses an
angle A, and the ratio of the side opposite to A and the side opposite to the right angle (the
hypotenuse) is known as the sine of A, or sin A; the other trigonometry functions are defined
likewise. These functions are properties of the angle A independent of the size of the triangle,
and calculated values were tabularized for numerous angles prior to computers making
trigonometry tables outdated. Trigonometric functions are used in finding unknown angles
and distances from known or measured angles in geometric figures (Barnard, 2011).
Fig 1.1 shows an illustration of trigonometry six functions expressed by Barnard (2011).
Concepts that had to be accommodated are angles, sides, right-angled triangle, perpendicular,
bottom side, hypotenuse, height, base, sine, cosine, Pythagoras theorem, measurable relation,
tangent, pure numbers, cosecant, secant, and cotangent. The simplest trigonometry function
starts by defining two basic functions on ∠θ, namely, sinθ and cosθ.
