Conflict of Interest
1. What conflicts of interest have you personally experienced in personal or professional
roles?
In personal roles, I have experienced conflicts of interests as I’ve been a TA for classes. I
had to grade my roommates test which is a conflict of interest because I may have
graded her test easier than everyone else’s because I wanted her to do well. To avoid
this conflict of interest, I just let my professor grade the test.
2. If you perceive a potential conflict for yourself, what are some ways you might ensure
that this conflict doesn’t lead to unethical behavior for you and others?
One way to avoid conflict of interests is public disclosure of roles and responsibility.
Another is having checks and balances with coworkers. Lastyly, being transparent at
work and let someone know of any red flags.
3. When have others’ conflicts of interest impacted how you or those you know were
treated?
Conflicts of interest can lead to an individual focused workplace instead of a team
environment. People who expose others for conflict of interest often lose their comfort
and security in their job .
4. What types of policies can or do organizations implement to try to reduce conflicts of
interest or their costs?
Disclosure of financial interest for all employees and have a board or committee
determine if a conflict of interest exists for the individual. Create a positive attitude
towards the company, people will be less likely to act on a conflict of interest if they really
love the company and want to see it succeed.
