question?
(I expect a well thought out and well supported answer here)
I think that in the present time Wal-Mart may be good for America, but in the grand scope
of things it may have negative effects upon the American people. The low prices that it is
able to offer its consumers can be very beneficial, but the fact that it is causing a loss of
jobs as well as outsourcing to cheaper imported goods is something that in the end may
have a huge impact on the United States economy as a whole. Low prices are good, but
the costs that it takes to get these low prices are commonly overlooked when they
should actually be given the most attention.
B) What are the main arguments for and against?
Those saying that Wal-Mart is good for America would argue that lower priced items are
beneficial to people, especially during an economic recession when people don’t have
such a high disposable income. Also, Wal-Mart can be seen as a convenient company,
primarily because it houses such a wide array of products under one roof. Those that
would argue against Wal-Mart would claim that it eliminates small businesses as well as
takes control of others, seemingly extending its power to a degree that could jeopardize
the economy. Also, the outsourcing of companies to countries where the costs are
cheaper as well as the over-importing of cheaper goods can lead to a detrimental effect
on U.S trade in its entirety.
2. A) Who are the winners and who are the losers from the “rise” of Wal-Mart?
The winners within this argument seem to be both the consumers and Wal-Mart itself.
The consumers win primarily because they are getting the lowest prices possible,
seemingly increasing the value of their actual income. Wal-Mart as a corporation wins
because it is gaining more power within the world, not only with its profits but its power
over other companies around the world. The losers seem to be the smaller businesses
that Wal-Mart beats out and forces to close down, as well as those companies that can
fall victim to Wal-Mart’s power. Because Wal-Mart is such a big brand and has the power
to increase or decrease the supply of a company’s product that it carries, it seemingly
controls the very future of that individual company.
B) Provide specific examples from the video.
An example of a loser within the video was Rubbermaid. Because Rubbermaid had to
increase prices but Wal-Mart was not willing to accept that, its sales drastically went
down due to Wal-Mart’s limitation upon how much Rubbermaid supply was being sold
and eventually lead the company to being bought out by a more powerful one. Another
“loser” within the video is the small town that loses its ability to provide a stable and well-
off community due to the shut down of many plants due to Wal-Mart’s external suppliers
in China.
