The purpose of the lab is to observe the effect of how heat flows through
different methods, such as conduction, convection, and radiation. The understanding of
these types of energy transfer can apply to many different types of things so it is
important to have a good understanding of what it all means so that we may be able to
properly analyze the data of this experiment and many more that may be done.
The steps followed during this lab was as followed: I read the guide to gain an
understanding of what to expect in the lab. After I was done reading, I open the virtual
lab to begin the lab. I read the information about convection that was provided to
properly get an understanding on what to do. To start, place two blocks on the two sides
of the table and place the foil bridge above them. Carefully place the chocolate on the
foil bridge. Place an unlit candle under the bridge and start the time the second that the
candle is lit. Wait for the first chocolate piece to melt, then start the time. Repeat this
process for every chocolate piece. Once done with that experiment, read about
convection and understand the differences of the experiment compared to the previous
one. Have a glass of cold water and a dropper with blue water. Start a time the second
the blue dyed water is placed in the cold water. Observe what happens to the blue
water. The time will stop every 30 seconds until it reaches 3 minutes. Write all the
observations down in the table provided in the experiment. Once done with the cold
water, have a glass of hot water and a dropper with red dyed water. Start the time the
second the red dye touches the water and observe the results for the next several
minutes. Observe what happens to the red water. The time will stop every 30 seconds
until it reaches 3 minutes. Write all observations down in the table provided. Once the
experiment is complete, read about radiation to properly get an understanding as to
what there is to do in the following experiment in the lab. Have two pieces of paper, one
being black and the other being white, and two lamps. Move the white paper under the
lamp provided. Move the black paper to a different lamp. Once both papers are in place,
turn on both lamps. Observe the temperature of the paper and record the data in the
table provided. The timer will be stopped every 30 seconds for the next 3 minutes. Once
all data is collected, the laboratory is complete.
Suggestions to improve the understanding of the lab is to provide more thorough
understanding of each type of energy transfer shown. I would suggest performing more
experiments to give each student a better idea of what type of transfer applies to which
scenario. Another suggestion would be to provide students with more types of examples
of these experiments so that they may try these independently.
