DUE APRIL 6 10:00PM – Upload to Canvas
1. Below is a list of 14 various biological structures. Order the structures (from
#1-14) from largest to smallest in size. If you would like a visual interactive reference
visit: http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/cells/scale/
__6___skin cell __4___grain of salt
__5___human egg cell __8___chromosome
__3___grain of rice __13___DNA nucleotide
__2___liver __12___protein
__1___human _11____influenza virus
__9___nucleus __7___human red blood cell
__10___bacterial cell __14___one molecule of H2O
2. What is a gene (provide a description in your own words)?
Genes are a functional unit of heredity that is transferred from parent to
offspring, genes also are in charge of determining the characteristics of such
offspring
3. __Alleles____________ are forms of the same gene with small differences in
their sequence of DNA bases because they come from two different people.
4. In your own words, write 2-3 sentences describing how genetic information is
organized in a human cell using ALL of the words listed below. (you may use a
word more than once).
Genes can be found inside chromosomes, also, chromosomes are encoded with
DNA. The nucleus is where the genetic information is organized. The DNA is
found wrapped around proteins, this way it can fit well into the nucleus. A cell is
the long-term storage for DNA
