Accreditation Plan Table
Piedmont Hospital has rooms available to psych patients in order for them to gain
medical clearance so that they may be sent to mental health facilities to receive the appropriate
care. Sometimes these patients will have to stay in a room in the emergency department for days
until placement can be found for them elsewhere, which can sometimes worsen the existing
problem. Sitting in a room uncertain of where you may end up, uncertain of what kind of help
you’ll be receiving, uncertain when you’ll be somewhere long term, all of this heightens the
anxiety in these patients.
What if these patients did not have to be sent out but were able to receive the appropriate
care right there in the hospital? If Piedmont wanted to gain accreditation for behavioral/mental
health they would look to the Joint Commission. “The Joint Commission surveys many types of
organizations under the behavioral health care standards, including mental health services,
addiction treatment, eating disorders treatment, ID/DD services, and social service/human
service agencies serving children and families. Accredited organizations may serve people
throughout the life span or specialize in an age or disability group” ("Eligibility", 2020). The
department head decides that this is something to look into. Piedmont Hospital is looking to open
a new behavioral/mental health program through the Joint Commission, but what will that
process look like?
