Historians examine primary source documents to help them answer historical questions. You will do
the same on your AP Exam in the Document-Based Question (DBQ). In a DBQ, not only do you
examine and analyze evidence, but you also evaluate it for its value in answering a historical inquiry
question.
Now you will examine a few primary source documents that relate to the farmers’ experiences in the
Gilded Age. Your task is to summarize each and explain its value in responding to this historical
question:
How did farmers have their own “Gilded Age”?
Steps:
1. Read and analyze each of the following documents in the template using the HAP-P
process. The four documents are:
○ Document 1—“Gift for the Grangers” poster illustration
○ Document 2—Value of Crops per Bushel chart
○ Document 3—Excerpt from a National Grange circular
○ Document 4—“The Populist Paul Revere” political cartoon
2. Use this template to summarize each document and explain why it is significant to the
historical question. You will also evaluate the documents against each other in a separate
reflection. Be sure to draw connections between elements in each document and the
importance of each one.
