PATIENT CARE
• INTRODUCTION-
➢ Patient care is an important part of radiology because patients undergoing
radiologic procedures are stressed and anxious and require the most care and
attention. Radiology is a medical specialty that uses imaging techniques to
diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions. It involves the use of
radiation to create images of the body, such as x-rays, magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (ct) scans.
➢ Patient care in radiology includes a variety of activities such as gathering
patient history explaining the procedure providing necessary information
about pre and post-procedure care, and explaining any questions the patient
may have. Radiologic technologists also known as radiographers are
healthcare professionals who perform radiologic procedures.
➢ During the procedure patients may experience a variety of emotions such as
anxiety, fear, or discomfort. Patient care in radiology is all about the patient
safety and comfort during pre or post the procedure.
• HISTORY-
➢ Early 1900: Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen's discovery of X-rays in 1895 marked
the beginning of radiology. During the early days of radiology however little
thought was given to patient safety or comfort during procedures. Without
any precautions X-rays were used and patients were frequently exposed to
high levels of radiation resulting in severe injuries or even death.
➢ Patient care is now an essential component of radiology practise. Radiologic
technologists are trained to provide high quality care which includes patient
education procedure preparation and patient monitoring during and after the
procedure.
➢ Strict regulations are in place to ensure patient safety and minimize radiation
exposure.
, • METHODS OF PATIENT CARE-
✓ Several methods are used in radiology patient care to ensure the patient's
comfort, safety, and overall well being.
a. During radiologic procedures patients may feel discomfort or anxiety
so Radiologic technologists can provide comfort measures.
b. To reduce patient exposure to radiation radiologic technologists must
follow strict radiation protection protocols includes wearing lead
aprons, thyroid shields, and other safety equipment.
c. Correct positioning to obtaining correct images and reduce patient
discomfort.
d. Providing detailed explaination of the procedure.
e. Answer the patient question and intrsuct the pre procedure to the
patient.
f. Monitoring vital signs of the patient such as heart rate, blood pressure,
discomfortness.
g. Providing lead aprons.
h. Instruct about the post procedure.
i. Providing post procedure care such as stress, discomfortness, any
reaction or side effect, hydraion.
j. Ask patient to stay in the department after the procedure.
• PATIENT CARE IN PREPERATION-
➢ It is necessary to provide the patient with clear instructions explain the
procedure how long it will take, what the patient must do and what they can
expect before the procedure.
➢ Patient should be comfortable.
➢ Before the test the patient may need to know certain food restrictions verify
that the patient is aware of these restrictions and that they are followed as
instructed.
➢ Check or ask patient whether he or she taking any medication.
➢ Ask patient they have any type of allergy to anything.
➢ Confirm the pregnancy status if any married girl come to you.
➢ Proper care of hygiene such as hand wash etc.
