In order for nurses to provide exceptional patient care they must use evidence-based
practice. By applying well-founded interventions, nurses are able to care for their patients to the
best of their ability in a way that is both safe and patient centered. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome
occurs when a person who is dependent on alcohol decreases consumption or stops drinking. It
usually starts two to six hours after the last drink and progresses over hours to days. Symptoms
can range from mild to severe. Multiple episodes of withdrawal can lead to increased intensity of
each episode. Alcohol withdrawal syndrome can also lead to alcohol withdrawal delirium which
typically involves admission to the ICU followed by sedation, intubation, and mechanical
ventilation. Considering this, healthcare workers should use an evidence-based practice approach
to care for, manage, and assess patients with alcohol withdrawal syndrome (Elliott et al., 2019).
Considering Criteria to Determine Credibility
When determining credibility of resources, certain criteria should be considered. The
CRAAP test allows users to determine the currency, relevance, authority, accuracy and purpose
of the source. The first criteria is currency, meaning that the source must be up to date and no
more than five years old. The second criteria is relevance which asks if the source is relevant to
the subject. The third criteria is accuracy which requires the user to evaluate the truthfulness of
the source. The fourth criteria is authority which requires the user to ensure that the person
writing the source has credentials, knowledge and experience on the subject at hand. The fifth
criteria is purpose which requires the user to determine if the purpose of the source is to inform
or to persuade (Pfeiffer et al., 2020). The criteria could be applied to a specific resource to ensure
credibility. For example, a source about caring for patients in the ICU with AWS written by a
high school student studying anatomy would not be as credible as a source written by a medical
