Layers of the Eye There are three main layers of the eye, each serving a different purpose. Outermost layer: This layer is made up of the sclera and the cornea, comprising 93% and 7% of the eye's surface respectively. The cornea has five epithelial layers and the innermost layer is highly vascularized to deliver oxygen and nutrients. The outer layer provides protection. Inner Layer: This layer contains the choroid, a thin, highly vascularized layer that covers the inside of the sclera. The ciliary bodies and iris are also part of this layer. The retina, which accounts for 7% of the eye's surface, is the innermost layer and consists of a pigment layer and a neural layer. The Retina The retina is responsible for producing a clear image on the surface of the eye. The neural layer produces thin portions called ciliary bodies, while the pigment layer contains the inner and outer layers. The outermost layer of the retina is thick, while the inner layer is thin and transparent.
