Intro
Bourdain begins by mentioning that despite Colombia’s beautiful landscape and diverse
mix of Spanish, Indigenous, African, and European cultures, it is still remembered by its
darker past
This past involves the civil unrest and cartel wars that occurred within the country
Bourdain makes note of the fact that everyone he has met in Colombia are very
hospitable and that the people there are very proud of their country
Furthermore, their pride in their heritage has resulted in them working tirelessly in order
to have people remember them for more than cocaine
The flight from Villavicencio
Bourdain begins his journey with Pablo Mora, a teacher at Medellin University who is
fascinated by Golden Age
During the flight, Bourdain begins to narrate the history of the people that live in the
more remote area of Colombia
He talks about the war on drugs that has occurred to the Marxist guerilla group known as
the FARC which is responsible for the kidnappings and deaths of many
Miraflores
The area is an Amazonian reserve and was known as a one time center for cocaine
production
Due to its remote location, it has a heavy presence of military and law enforcement
