Quality Improvement project
The healthcare provides essential services to human beings. Some of these services
include disease diagnosis, treatment, management, control, and prevention. “Governments from
all over the world are adopting strategies that would ensure affordable and universal health care
plans for every individual” (Metcalf, Wang & Habermann, 2018). While these plans assure an
improvement in the healthcare, there are several areas of concern that should be addressed. One
of the major that effect health care is not having enough staff (Metcalf, Wang & Habermann,
2018). Staffing shortages is an issue that causes poor patient outcomes and extra expensive and
potential problems in the future. This paper suggests a quality improvement program that seeks
to address the staffing challenge and the cause of the nurse shortage.
Purpose
Staffing is one of the primary issues in my community hospital and in hospitals all over
the world which leads to other problems. Hospitals serves a vast population and has been
struggling for years. Factors such as the aging population brings a need for more staff as people
grow older, the demand for complex care grows due to various chronic conditions. At the same
time, the number of Americans aged 65 and older will almost double by 2050.
Nursing burnout is another cause for the shortage in healthcare. Stress from shortages is
causing nurses to leave the field to pursue other avenues of work. We have fewer nurses and
increase in patients creating a problem that needs to be addressed. There is a need for the hospital
to have more staff based on acuity to prevent falls, errors in medications, and missed
communication due to poor staffing. Having adequate staffing is an essential factor in the
planning and outcomes of excellent care in health care.
