GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Sean says two words aloud. What are they? What is their significance to the story?
ANSWER: Sean says the words “stains” and “heat” aloud. Based from what I’ve understand,
stains signify the dirt, dust or smoke in the hotel room; blood stains are also present in the bed
sheets. Heat signify the oozing temperature of the hotel room and of the city.
2. How can these two words be seen as metaphors or symbols in the story?
ANSWER: Stains can also symbolize as the blood of the innocent people who died in the hands
of bad people; it can also symbolize the dirty doings in the city of Manila. Heat on the other
hand symbolizes the seeking of revenge of the ones who lost a certain person in the hands of
bad men.
3. What are the usual things that are associated with McDonald’s? why is it beginning,
Sean found it comforting?
ANSWER: The things that are usually associated with the fast-food chain is the cleanliness of
the place, the staff are surely wiping and cleaning dirt off to their property, how cool the air
condition is, a group of children that are celebrating a friends’ birthday party. Sean found the
view of the ships in the water comforting.
4. What are the things that the American finds strange after spending an afternoon in
McDonald’s? Can these observations be stretched to include Philippine society?
ANSWER: Sean observed the overweight, wealthy, bratty children who were loud and shouting
at their nannies, he also predicted that most of the kids are already groomed for the life of
politics. If these children are rich, why would they celebrate at a fast-food burger joint? The
English Seaman thought. His observations can be connected to the Philippines society, I myself
have also observed how rich people are such penny pinchers, them choosing to eat in a fast-food
joint yet they complain about the service that the restaurant could give, typical rich people
indeed.
5. How do you feel about his observations? Do you agree with him?
ANSWER: I kind of agree with him, not generalizing all people with wealth, but there are some
rich people that are totally demanding yet they’re afraid of paying a lot. They do not realize that
