religious groups, and many communities attempt to censor and ban certain books and other
materials due to the topics the books cover, such as LGBT issues, political viewpoints, and
religious viewpoints. Some parents claim that these topics can be harmful to their children and
want to prevent their children from reading books that cover these topics. Such controversial
topics can actually be beneficial to many children in helping them to learn more about
themselves and be more open to certain ideas and beliefs. I believe children of a certain age
should be able to make their own choices of what they choose to read and what not to read.
People attempting to ban books has become a big problem within recent years. Many
different genres of literature and media have been banned or restricted from view from children
and young adults over the past years. Some of the books are surprising to see challenges to be
banned, such as Dr. Seuss children’s books and Harry Potter, to name a couple. These books
mean a lot to many now adults or teenagers currently, so it is unusual that they would be banned
considering all the positive impact they’ve had on people in the past. Nonetheless, the people
who challenge these books have specific reasons for their actions.
When looking at some of the most recently challenged books, you can see the common
themes and content people do not want their children to see, two of which include A Day in the
Life of Marlon Bundo, a story about a male bunny who happens to be in a romantic relationship
with another male bunny, and Drama, a young coming of age novel. From even just these two
books, it appears that the people challenging these books do not want children to be exposed to
LGBT themes or stories designed for young teenagers going through the situations shown in
Drama. From personal experience, stories like Drama provide a sense of connection, comfort,
