Unit 2.4 - Motivation Theories (A03)
, Frederick Winslow Taylor - Scientific Management
KEY: Demanded rigorous analysis of input, output and costs
WHAT:
● Each job aspect analysed scientifically, most efficient method
of achieving it is created
● Most suitable person for job selected and taught created
method of carrying out job
● Managers cooperate with workers = efficiency
● Clear division of work and responsibility between management
and workforce
EFFECT:
● Reduces inefficiency of workers and managers through
‘objective laws’
● Encourages specialisation and repetitive work
● Clear division of work between managers and workers
● Reduction of inefficiencies allowed/higher wages
MAY FAIL BECAUSE:
● Most efficient way of working for one person may not work for
another
● Economic interest of works + management = rarely identical
● Difficulties of measuring and rewarding service based
employment e.g. nursing
‘Taylorism’ is associated with mass production and the division of
labour —> relies on time and motion study to find ‘one beat method’
= goal achieved
Mass production: manufacturing of large quantities of a product
(through assembly lines/technology)
Division of labour: separation of work process into multiple tasks,
each task performed by separate person/group
