NR 534 Week 4 Discussion Question 1: Collaborative Interdisciplinary Groups Explaining of your opinion about the required topic. Appling the concepts of the topic to your specific practice area Debating with your classmates the pros and cons of your position regarding the topic. Responding to classmates with an extended description instead of merely agreeing. Week 1 Welcome to the Collaboration Cafe. The Nurse Tim Webinar this week was How to Succeed as a Nurse Educator in a Faculty Role presented by Dr. Diane Billings. Discuss with your classmates, three key points from the webinar that will be instrumental in your success as a nurse educator. Class, I found the Nurse Tim webinar this week to be very interesting. One of the key points that I took from the Nurse Tim webinar was the competencies that are associated with the nursing educator. They are important in order to shape how we teach nursing educators and guide work as nursing educators. The competencies are important in shaping and providing guidance in which faculty look at when they are educating both nursing students but also keeping nursing staff up to date. The second key point that I took away from the nurse Tim webinar, was the point of finding the right fit. It is important that we evaluate what we would ultimately like to do as a nursing educator. Do you want to teach students or do research? It is important that we look at our end goals in order to ensure that we are successful. It may happen that we may change our minds over time, but it is good to re-evaluate your position. These are all a part of the environmental scanning that you must look at when applying for a job as a nursing educator. The third key point that I took away from the Nurse Tim webinar was to manage change. Change happens often in healthcare and as a nursing educator we need to be both flexible and adaptable to change. Preparing to move forward is important and when evidence shows that change is needed, it is critical that as the nursing educator, we are finding the most up to date evidenced based research in order to shape our policy and procedural changes. I feel that this would come in handy especially for myself when looking at becoming a clinical educator for the operating room. The OR is a very fast paced environment that can change at any moment. We can have a sentinel event that can occur that will alter our policies immediately. It is important that as the clinical educator, I am able to adapt and research for EBP change in order to fix issues right away. Cassie Arvidson Week 2 This week, we started to look at various philosophies of teaching and learning. In Week 3, you will be asked to submit your Personal Philosophy of Teaching and Learning using a voice-over PowerPoint presentation. This week, start to write your philosophy of teaching and learning and post your initial philosophy. Then review two of your classmates’ philosophy statements and provide constructive feedback on their philosophy statements. Professor and Class, A teaching philosophy is an individuals own beliefs and values about teaching and learning that also provides examples of ways that those beliefs/values can be executed (Bowne, 2017). Teaching philosophies are always a work in progress and will change based on experiences and a place in an individual’s career (Yeom, Miller, & Delp, 2018). They are based on a learning theory that provides framework for the philosophy. It can also be used with resumes for future advancement and proper placement to help fit and align with career goals. After looking through the various learning theories I have found that I would like to be most associated with the constructivism learning theory. I feel that the knowledge that we have in nursing is created through the experiences that we have had and that we use this past knowledge to bring to situations that we face in the future (Constructivism, 2018). My philosophy of teaching is that learning is an essential part of students’ education. I believe that by creating a stimulating and learning environment that incorporates unique learning styles and methods, students will be successful. I will base my learning methods on constuctivism and will use such methods as class discussions, problem-based learning, discovery learning and guided experimentation to help students discover their answers through personal experience. I will meets essential needs of all students through the use of various teaching methods such as PowerPoints, research projects and other unique forms of media. From my experiences as an undergraduate and throughout my masters classes I have learned that advanced nursing concepts can be a difficult concept to grasp and the teacher can make all difference in a students advancement. Bowne, M. (2017). Developing a Teaching Philosophy. Journal of Effective Teaching, 17(3), 59–63. Retrieved from Constructivism. (2018). In M. H. Oermann, Teaching in Nursing and Role of the Educator: The Complete Guide to Best Practice in Teaching, Evaluation, and Cirriculum Development, Second Edition (pp. 22-24). New York: Springer Publishing Company. Yeom, Y., Miller, M. A., & Delp, R. (2018). Constructing a teaching philosophy: Aligning beliefs, theories, and practice. Teaching and Learning in Nursing, 13(3), 131–134. Week 4 What sort of classroom management style will you exhibit once you begin teaching? Which style is most consistent with your personality? How might you work to achieve changes if you don't like what you see? Professor and Class, Once I begin my teaching career, I would prefer to use the authoritative style teaching for my classroom management. I feel like this style has a good balance of expectations and appropriate behavior (Hagler & Morris, 2018). It also has limits and controls, but it is more reasonable because there is reasoning behind all the rules. I think that this style provides a good basis for control and involvement with students. I am a very concerning and empathetic person, who by nature loves to talk and have interactions with others. I think that the authoritative style would definitely fit my personality best. I think that one of the best ways to change things if I am not seeing the desired outcome, would be to have clear cut discussions about expectations. Some other strategies that would help to improve changes in the learning environment would be to clarify questions with students at the end of lecture, develop an interactive study group led by students and also create an encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable to challenge answers (Hagler & Morris, 2018). Cassie Arvidson Hagler, D., & Morris, B. (2018). Learning environment and teaching methods. In M. Oermann, J. DeGagne, & B. Phillips (Eds.), Teaching in nursing and role of the educator (pp. 47–74). New York, NY: Springer Publishing Company. Week 5 The NurseTim® Webinar this week was Innovative Ways to Engage Diverse Learners by Ms. Deck. Based on the webinar, the readings for the week, the lesson, and your individual research into didactic teaching strategies, and as Ms. Deck asked in the webinar, what is your secret talent that could make you a star? To put it another way, tell us what you believe will be your best attribute that you will bring to the didactic teaching environment. Professor and Class, I think that one think that I will bring to the classroom environment will be enthusiasm for teaching and relating information to real life scenarios. I have a lot of life experience that I have learned in the medical field that goes all the way back to when I was in high school. I started in 11th grade volunteering on an ambulance. I saw many things that people couldn’t even imagine, before I graduated high school. This love of the medical field continued on throughout college and eventually working as a nurse in 2011. I love watching and learning new things. I am very enthusiastic about learning new information and relating it to something that is understandable. I love the Nursetime webinars. I feel like I learn a lot of information from them and I feel as though I learned great strategies for teaching and keeping the attention of an audience. I am definitely a visual learner as are most others. It is important that when we are looking at various strategies to help engage our diverse sets of learners that we customize our teaching environment to try and capture the entire audience. “Pedagogical practices should contribute to improve learning and stimulate students to seek methods that will help them become more participatory and critical individuals in their training process “(Peres, Rodrigues, Davejao, Lemos & de Fatima Mantovani, 2018, p. 30).
