MINUTES OF A MEETING
5.2 Measures that can be considered towards dealing with plagiarism
The chairperson Ms Solani requested Mr Nene to provide information on the scourge of plagiarism, as
he was working in the assessment office.
Mr. Nene reported that they had experienced a spike in plagiarism cases since they had moved to the
online classes. He confirmed that they had dealt with students who engaged in these unscrupulous
activities before, but now they were in trouble with plagiarism. He also added that in the last
examination sessions, the number of students who faced the disciplinary actions for various kinds of
plagiarism had increased with 29%.
Mr. Nene added that they thought of involving the SRC in finding solution. He also said that in their
discussions that led to a draft intervention strategy where they code offences, Amber and Red offences,
where Amber stood for serious offences and Red stood for severe offences, and the suggested measures
could be a year suspension for Amber offences and three years suspension for Red offences. But they
were yet to determine which activities would fall under each category. The suggestion was rejected by
Mr. Zaba who thought that they should involve the police. And the matter was put to vote, and it was
resolved that they will pursue Mr. Nene suggestions.
Mr Lale raised a request that they need more consultation on the issue of distinguishing between the
levels of Amber and Red offences. He was requested to lead the consultation process with students, and
he was expected to with a report in two weeks.
