COURSE COMMUNICATION
All course announcements and individual email are sent through Titanium, which only uses
CSUF email accounts. Therefore, you MUST check your CSUF email on a regular basis (several
times a week) for the duration of the course. I will be online daily, M – F.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Prerequisite: SOCI 101. This course uses sociological research and theory to understand drug
use in the U.S. Topics include drug subcultures, moral panics, the social consequences of drug
policies, crime and trends in drug use. Units: (3).
COURSE OBJECTIVES /STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOS):
Students pursuing a degree in sociology will achieve the following learning outcomes:
1. Students will apply key sociological concepts.

, 2. Students will compare, contrast, and critique major theoretical and
epistemological orientations in sociology including functionalism, conflict,
interactionism, and feminism.
3. Students will demonstrate critical thinking from various sociological perspectives,
such as reflecting on their social location, evaluating the implicit assumptions of
everyday life, challenging commonsense understandings, and assessing the
structure of an argument.
4. Students will demonstrate clear and effective written and oral communication skills.
5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research
design and methods and evaluate their appropriate use.
6. Students will use sociological knowledge and skills to engage with local and
global communities for the purpose of social justice.
7. Students will demonstrate a critical understanding of power, privilege, and
oppression across a range of cultures, human experiences, and the intersections of
social locations and historical experiences, including their own.

GRADING STANDARDS, AND CRITERIA
Course Grading will NOT include +/- grading. The grading scale will be as follows:
A = 90 – 100% (360 - 400 points)
B = 80 – 89% (320 - 359)
C = 70 – 79% (280 - 319)
D = 60 – 69% (240 - 279)
F = 59% and below (239 and below)
Keep all assignments and exams returned to you so that any discrepancies can be easily and
fairly straightened out.
GRADING POLICY
Assignments will be graded based on thoughtful completion of requirements outlined on
prompts. Class participation will be measured through class discussions, group activities, in-
class written assignments, and discussion of HW assignments.
Student Grade Record:
To calculate your grade at any point in the semester: go to Titanium and click on Grades under
the Settings block on the left side of the screen. Add up all the points you’ve earned and it by
the total points possible at that point. Multiple by 100 and you will know what your current
percentage is in the course.
