Case study Nonjabulo and Matome have been married for the past 15 years. Although their marriage has been characterised by normal marital challenges, they are now faced with a serious problem. Nonjabulo just found out that Matome has a serious drug addiction. She unsuccessfully tried to get Matome to consult medical practitioners to get help. Matome doesn’t acknowledge that he has a problem. According to him, he is experiencing an ancestral calling and is fulfilling his ancestors’ wishes by using drugs. In their neighbourhood there is a group that focuses mainly on lessons and activities aimed at teaching teenagers about the dangers of substance abuse. The members of the group have never been involved in substance abuse. The group merely serves as a preventative mechanism. Nonjabulo decides to approach the group’s facilitator and asks him if Matome can enrol in the group. The facilitator agrees, and Nonjabulo manages to convince Matome to join the group. The next day Nonjabulo takes Matome to the group so that he can begin with the process of rehabilitation. However, the difference in age and maturity between Matome and the other group members poses a big challenge. Matome is 45 years old and has been married for 15 years while all the other members are 15 to 23 years old.
