1st Quarter Exercise on Beowulf
Part I. Short Answers (60 points total)
1. Grendel’s ancestors descended from the cursed blood line of Cain the evil son of Adam and
Eve in the Bible. Moreover, Cain was punished with guilt and banished to the land of Nod by
God for the murder of his brother Abel. Furthermore, the poem states his spawns were monsters
from myth, with trolls, goblins, and giants.
2. Beowulf defends himself from ridicule with his account of the race he said that in swimming
Breca could not outstrip him, but for five nights he would not leave him. Then the waves
separated them, he persevered through freezing winds, rough waves, and then he slayed sea
monsters that had tried to drown him.
3. In the fight between Beowulf and Grendel, Grendel grasps Beowulf as he struggled his strong

free. Then Beowulf wrestles with Grendel the thanes attack with swords but are ineffective
because he put a spell on every blade so his fate was death through hand-to-hand combat only.
Eventually Beowulf defeats Grendel by tearing off his arm at his shoulder, with a mortal wound
Grendel fled into the darkness and died.
4. Beowulf’s thoughts on that he was glad that he was king for fifty years, yet never attacked or
challenged by any neighboring kings for they were too afraid and that he never made any vows
he could not keep.
