Impacts of social media on mental health
Studies consistently highlight that the use of social media, especially heavy use and
prolonged time on social media platforms, appears to contribute to increased risk for a variety
of mental health symptoms and poor well-being especially among young people. Some
studies have indicated that social media use has led to negativities such as depression and
suicidal thoughts while others have argued out the fact of its benefits to some individuals and
have therefore failed to find harm in social media (Berryman, 2017). Therefore, results
obtained from the studies show that the concern over the use of social media may be
somehow misplaced in relation to how it has been used.
Most teenagers spend a lot of time in social media, an issue that raises concern among
many. Findings from the present studies indicate that there is a wide difference between
social media users and the intensity realized in it. It has been revealed that many who suffer
from social media are the users and rather not how the intensity influences people and are
likely to face problems related to whatever action they are involved (Boer et al., 2021). From
these findings, it implies that the policies and guidelines that are aimed at identifying,
preventing and informing about unhealthy social media users should focus on the user’s
problems and not the user’s intensity. Overall, more research that is related to the use of
social media users and intensity of how social media is being used should be done in order to
establish the linkage between the two. By doing this, effective ways of dealing with handling
and guidance of teenagers when using social media can be put into effective action.
Consequently, previous research studies from Hackney & Sanders (2003). , have
revealed that religiosity has positively benefited student’s mental health by promoting
psychic development, healthy state of mind and emotional stability. In addition, it reduces the
tendency to high risk behavior, aggression and impulsive reactions. Other scholars suggest
