Starting with a framing device initiated by Bob and completed by Jo, the pair of hosts
quickly establish their roles in the podcast. Straight away from Jo’s second piece of
dialogue, we as the listener are drawn to his enthusiasm, “Lights in the sky, radar
traces…”, listing features of the exciting world of UFO activity. This passionate tone from
Jo continues throughout exclaiming, “It’s secret files on aliens!” as his character grows
increasingly endearing. Although sometimes he cannot answer Bob’s pelt of questions,
answering his question on evidence with a statement, directly diverting the topic.
Comparatively, Bob acts as the sceptic in their journey through extra-terrestrial terrain,
claiming UFO sightings are, “very unlikely”, aggressive towards Jo’s elation firing
questions on history, evidence and explanations. By using a rhetorical tag question,
“Aren’t they”, Bob is explicitly patronising, almost challenging Jo to respond. At the end
of the extract, Bob plays topic manager and simultaneously uses topic shift whilst
dismissing Jo, “That’s another mystery solved then”, interrupts Bob, as he reaches the
limit to Jo’s naivety.
