made friends with Rizal. Rizal and
his fellow travelers played chess to
pass the time during the long flight.
Then, as a skilled chess player, he
repeatedly defeated them.

● On board, French was spoken, so
Rizal made an effort to talk with his
fellow passengers in that
language. However, he discovered
that his book's French was not
understandable, so he instead
spoke a mixed Spanish-Latin
language while drawing on paper.
He was then able to advance his
command of the French language
by having everyday conversations
with the French travelers.
