COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING
I. LESSON CONTENT
Overview
Are you tired of drawing using the manual technical drawing technique using pen and paper or you want
to draw but your pen craft or your manual technical drawing is not good and presentable but you have the idea
and you want to show in drawing? CAD which is Computer Aided Drafting is the answer.
Learning to use CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) system is similar to learning a new software. It is to
begin with the basic alphabet learning how to use it correctly and effectively through regular practice.
All CAD system create designs using Geometric entities. Construction used in technical designs are based
upon two-dimensional (2D) planar geometry. The method and number of operations that are needed to
accomplish differ from one system to another.
CAD software comes in many forms. The following are some CAD softwares to use: AutoCAD by
Autodesk Co., Google Sketchup, Draftsight, Home 3D, Pro-E, Solidworks, and many others.
In this course, AutoCAD version 2017 or later will be used. As the version goes higher, additional
features are in place. However, all basic commands are all the same.
Difference of E-drawing and Manual Technical Drawing
A drawing is a graphical representation of an object or plan which is the result of analysis and creative
thinking of man. Technically, drawing can be defined as a graphical representation of an idea, a concept or an
entity which actually or potentially exists in life.
Technical drawings remain an essential part of the construction, industrial, research, manufacturing and
other industries regardless of product type. The technology may have changed, but the techniques and the
principles are essentially the same. There are both advantages and disadvantages in both manual drafting and
CAD drafting. Prior to digitization, draftsmen use pencil, stencil and paper for drawing sketches. The Manual and
CAD Drafting has advantages of each.
Five major advantages of manual drafting:
1. Work Done is Original: The ability to bring creative style and expression to drawings is higher in manual
drafting.
2. Low Cost of Drawing Equipment: A drawing board, mini-drafter and pencils/eraser are much cheaper than a
CAD package.
3. No high-tech and Cutting Edge Technology Required: Like in the CAD system, you do not need systems
engineer(s), IT engineer and expensive air conditions and technicians to maintain a pencil and paper.
4. No Training Required: Apart from the training that we get when we study, there is no need for the designers
to be taught the CAD package being used.
5. No Yearly Subscriptions: With the CAD systems, you would need yearly subscriptions for the CAD
software, operating systems and other supporting software applications.
Five major advantages of CAD drafting:
1. Better Quality Designs: The higher accuracy will lead to better designs and helps in manufacturing faster.
Manual design not only takes more time but the errors caused will delay the process in overall.
2. Easy Saving and Sharing: All the designs and drawings created with the help of CAD can be easily saved
and preserved for future use and reference. These saved drawings can also be edited and printed whenever
required.
3. Modify and Reproduce Faster: Correcting any errors is much quicker when compared to using a pencil and
paper. In case of the CAD drafting, you can reproduce the drawing in no time and make many copies as you
want.
4. Ability to Create 3D CAD Models: CAD has the capability to transform an idea into a visible sketch in a
matter of few minutes. With a rough draft, one can create something with the CAD software. Creating 3D
CAD models manually is a very difficult and tiresome job.
5. Template and Database Creation: You can create any number of CAD templates with basic details that can
be used and reused any number of times.
