Theme 1: THE ADMINISTRATIVE PROCESS
1. What is the Administrative Process?
- The administrative process is a set of activities that are carried out in a company or organization with
the objective of optimizing the use of available resources. This is achieved by planning, organizing,
directing, and controlling resources to achieve objectives efficiently and effectively.
- It consists of four elementary stages. Through them, the members of a company seek to achieve the
proposed goals or objectives.
2. Origin of the Administrative Process
- The administrative process was first described by the French engineer Henry Fayol in his book
"Industrial and General Administration" published in 1916. In this work, Fayol detailed the phases and
characteristics of the administrative process that are used to this day.
- Frenchman Henri Fayol was an engineer and management theorist. He is known for his contributions to
the field of management and for being one of the founders of classical management theory. Fayol
based his theories on his experience at the French iron and coal company Compagnie Commentry
Fourchambault et Decazeville, where he held technical and managerial positions from 1888 to 1918.
For Fayol, the human factor is fundamental to the functioning of companies and the achievement of
goals and objectives.
- In "Industrial and General Administration" he established the six functions of any industrial enterprise
(technical, administrative, accounting, commercial, financial, security) and defined the administrative
functions as those responsible for coordinating and synchronizing the other five functions. Fayol
proposed four stages for an efficient and correct administrative process. These stages are planning,
organization, direction and control. According to Fayol, these stages are essential for effective
management and should be carried out in the order mentioned.
- He described fourteen principles to be applied within companies:
1) Hierarchy of command
2) Order
3) Discipline
4) Equity
5) Division of labor
6) Fair remuneration
7) Teamwork
8) Initiative
9) Staff Stability
10) Unity of Management
11) Centralization
12) Subordination of the Particular Interest to the General Interest
13) Authority and Responsibility
14) Unity of Command.
- Fayol's work is fundamental to many organizations and businesses. his approach focuses on three key
aspects: the implementation of the administrative process, technical principles, and the division of
labor. these aspects are essential for effective management and are widely used today.
3. Characteristics of the Administrative Process
A. The administrative process is a set of stages whose purpose is to achieve the objectives of a company
or organization in the most efficient way possible. These stages are planning, organization, direction
and control. The administrative process works as a guide to achieve the proposed objectives in an
efficient and effective way.
B. The application of this administrative process makes it possible to take advantage of the manpower
and the technical and material resources that a company possesses. The administrative process allows
to control resources in an organized way and to dispose them in an efficient way.
