- Cosmopolitanism : The idea that all peoples are a part of the same one community and equal. For an individual, this means that your world has no borders and you don't belong to any group other than a collective one. - Particularism : The idea that all people are a part of their own community and separate from each other. For an individual, this means that you are part of a defined group, you have borders and stay in your group with the same ideas. - America is the only country to define itself by a creed in the world - The American Creed 1. Freedom / liberty 2. Equalitsum 3. Individualism 4. Laissez - faire 5. Populism - John rawls (john rawlsiah consensus) - His political philosophy is to build political consensus to create a successful democracy, one problem with this is that no new ideas are coming. But, in a truly democratic state, there needs to be a conflict of ideas or it has to be antagonistic. In a truly democratic state there are also no permanent losers - Empirical : the idea of trial and error throughout time in a society or government - Agonium : the philosophy that conflict is good for democracy - How might systems thinking be used to solve social and everyday problems? - Systems thinking: a systematic way of thinking that can improve your everyday life. We observe different systems, for example a school is a system, as well as government, family, and machines. - Cognitive biases : when we know what our thinkinking biases are. - Helps us understand how and why we think the way we do and eventually others - Components of a systems thinking. - Beliefs and values - things one cares about and assigns meaning to. - Pattern in behavior - actions or behaviors - Events - the thing/moment that brings our attention to the system - Module 2 - How should we govern? - What should the government do? - Republic vs. Democracy: What Is the Difference? - The united states is a republic because it has a constitution that everyone answers to - No one is above the law in the united states - Every law that is created must flow from and through the constitution - Uncostitunonal: something that doesn't fit in the law or not lawful - The word government means something different than most people think. And can be broken down into 3 groups that exist independently - Judicial - The courts of the united states - Executive - 14 cabinet members - Legislative - House of representatives - Senate - - - Iroquois confederacy - 1722 important date - The US gained independence in 1776 54 years from the late date - In 1722 a great peacemaker brought peace to the five tribes - In 1744 a leader of the onondaga made a speech to the 13 colonies about how they should come together 30 years before the US gained independence - Iroquois Confederacy and the Great Law of Peace - Restricts members from holding more than one o ffi ce in the Confederacy. - Outlines processes to remove leaders within the Confederacy - Designates two branches of legislature with procedures for passing laws - Delineates who has the power to declare war - Creates a balance of power between the Iroquois Confederacy and individual tribes - This is almost identical to the US constitution, and came before the US. So the US had a template for their constitution - - The purpose of a Myth - Legitimize social institutes - Express the philosophical beliefs of a people - Help humans to accept the burdens of life - Sociological purpose of validating and maintain culture norms,
